About this text
The most famous exchange in the Zhuangzi — the debate on the bridge over the Hao (濠梁之辯). Zhuangzi delights in the fish; the logician Huizi objects that he cannot know a fish's joy; Zhuangzi turns the objection back on him. Playful and bottomless: a few lines on knowledge, other minds, and the limits of language.

莊子和惠子在濠水的橋上遊玩。莊子說：「白鰷魚游得那樣從容自在，這就是魚的快樂啊。」惠子說：「你又不是魚，怎麼知道魚的快樂？」莊子說：「你又不是我，怎麼知道我不知道魚的快樂？」庄子和惠子在濠水的桥上游玩。庄子说：「白鲦鱼游得那样从容自在，这就是鱼的快乐啊。」惠子说：「你又不是鱼，怎么知道鱼的快乐？」庄子说：「你又不是我，怎么知道我不知道鱼的快乐？」
Translation
Zhuangzi and Huizi were strolling across the bridge over the Hao River. Zhuangzi said: 'See how the minnows dart about so free and easy. This is the happiness of fish.' Huizi said: 'You're not a fish — how do you know what makes fish happy?' Zhuangzi said: 'You're not me — how do you know I don't know what makes fish happy?'
