A man of Chu, after a sacrifice, gave his retainers a single goblet of wine. The retainers said to one another, 'For several to drink it is not enough; for one to drink it is more than enough. Let us each draw a snake on the ground, and whoever finishes first shall drink the wine.' One man finished his snake first. He took up the goblet and was about to drink, when, holding the goblet in his left hand, he went on drawing with his right, saying, 'I can even add feet to it.' Before he had finished, another man completed his snake, snatched the goblet away, and said, 'A snake has no feet to begin with. How can you give it feet?' And he drank the wine. The man who added feet to the snake lost his wine in the end.
